6th Annual Ginormous Pumpkin Regatta Rows Into Daybreak

The leaves are turning colors. There's a cool bite in the air. Giant pumpkins are floating in Oquirrh Lake. That's right, the 6th annual Ginormous Pumpkin Regatta is coming to Daybreak! This unique and fun event will be taking place on Saturday, October 22nd in the North Shore area of Oquirrh Lake, and for those that have never seen something like this, you're in for a treat.

The fun started this past weekend when over a dozen growers hauled their giant pumpkins to Thanksgiving Point for the official weigh-in, where Ed Dennis took home the grand prize with a pumpkin that tipped the scales at a whopping 1,491.5 pounds, beating out his closest competitors by nearly 500 pounds. Based on the size of this pumpkin, it places him in the #2 spot for all-time pumpkin growers in Utah. That's a lot of pies! This is the fourth year Dennis has participated in the event, with his first entry coming in at 184 pounds. Needless to say, he's come a long way.

Next, these growers will be bringing their ginormous pumpkins to Daybreak, where they will be hollowed out and set afloat in Oquirrh Lake. The race will see the growers don fun costumes and see who can paddle their way to victory. In addition to that, LiveDAYBREAK will have fun activities for the kids, several food trucks and some great photo opportunities! The races will begin at 1:00 pm, after the pumpkins have been tested and hollowed out.

Once the races are done, the pumpkins will go on to even more fun, where they will be dropped on cars and will eventually find their way up to Hogle Zoo for the annual Giant Pumpkin Stomp, where they will be handed over to the elephants, who will stomp, chomp and roll the enormous treats.

This will be a fun event for all ages to come and enjoy! The pumpkins will be hitting the water all morning long and the carving will likely begin at about 11:00 am, and the racing heats will begin at 1:00 pm.
