LiveDAYBREAK Healthy Living Challenge

This is the LiveDAYBREAK’s Healthy Living Monthly Challenge page! Any time is a great time to start living healthier.
 
We’re looking for residents to take our challenge and report back at the end of the month on how it has made a difference in their lives. See monthly challenges below.
 

December

 

As the weather begins to become colder and our probability of precipitation increases, we tend to spend a lot more time indoors. It is important to continue to participate in activities that are beneficial to your well-being. One of those is reading!
 
Your challenge this month is to read for 20 minutes each day. Love the book your reading, lengthen the amount of time you are reading each day. Maybe instead of watching tv or looking at your phone before bed, you pick up a book? It will most likely help you sleep better. Perhaps, you dedicate 20 minutes to read as a family. Maybe you will discover a phenomenal new book that you can't wait to pass along to others for the holidays. Keep others updated on the book you are reading. There is nothing better than a good book recommendation. Happy Reading!
Grand Prize:
For this month, we will be raffling off 4 - $25 Gift Cards to Barnes and Noble for all those who complete the challenge.
 
In order to be eligible to win the grand prize, join the Healthy Living Challenge Facebook Group and be sure to post about progress. At the end of the month, we will be posting a final post asking who completed the challenge! Be sure to let us know!

 

 

November

 

With Thanksgiving at the end of the month, it seems appropriate to focus on gratitude for the month of November. Your challenge is to keep a gratitude journal for the entirety of the month. Each day, take a moment to reflect on and write down at least three things that you are grateful for.

  • Join the LiveDAYBREAK Healthy Living Challenge Facebook Group
  • Complete a journal entry every day
    • Find three things that you are thankful for
  • Report back once a week to the LiveDAYBREAK Facebook Group on your progress
  • For your efforts, you will be included in the drawing of our GRAND PRIZE
 
 

October

We've decided to make some fun changes to the LiveDAYBREAK Healthy Living Challenge. For the month of October, we'd like you to play a game of Healthy Living Bingo!

  • HOW IT WORKS
  • Join the LiveDAYBREAK Healthy Living Challenge Facebook Group
  • Complete as many tasks on the BINGO the card.
  • Aim to create various BINGOs and win prizes:
    • Normal bingo (across, down, diagonal)
      • You will receive a Dri-Fit LiveDAYBREAK Long Sleeve
    • X, Box Around Edges
      • You will be entered into a raffle for 1 of 2, $25 Top Golf Gift Cards
    • Black Out
      • You will be entered into a raffle for a Fitbit Alta
  • Return card to the Daybreak Community Center to claim your prize and be entered into the appropriate raffle!

September

Eat four servings of fruit per day

 
There is nothing wrong with indulging in a treat, but why not choose something packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants? Fruit can satisfy your sweet tooth without going overboard on empty calories. Give baked cinnamon apples, poached pears, caramelized bananas, or grilled peaches a try. This month your challenge is to replace three desserts per week with fruit.

 

 

Take the challenge prize: Those who accept the challenge will be able to pick up a CLIP ON RUNNING LIGHT at the Daybreak Community Center.

August

 

Getting enough sleep every night is vital to maintaining our mental and physical health. This month’s challenge is to get 7+ hours of sleep each night.

Walk 30 minutes per day

Walking 30 minutes per day can help lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease, improve cholesterol levels, and improve your overall mental health. The weather is beautiful and the nights are cool, get out and enjoy summer!

Move More

Exercise doesn’t have to be structured. The act of moving more improves your health. Try taking the stairs or parking farther away at the store. Get up! Play with the kids, take the dog on a longer walk, or go dancing. Just 30 minutes of exercise every day makes a big difference!

10,000 steps per day is a quality goal, so we want you to see if you can get 300,000 steps in the month of April!
 
If you don't have a pedometer, you can download one from your favorite app store!
  1. Set aside 30 minutes every day dedicated to exercise
  2. Choose a parking space farther away from the front door
  3. Take the stairs
  4. Visit the restroom at the other end of the building 
  5. Refill your coffee cup at the machine farthest from your workstation
  6. Use the printer or copier furthest away from your desk

March

Reduce screen time

Sitting in front of a screen means you’re not up moving around. Too much screen time can disrupt sleep, decrease attention span, and increase snacking. Experts recommend kids get no more than two hours of screen time a day. The challenge this month is to switch the power button to “off” do something else like read a book, play a game, or get outside!
  1. Establish three ½ hour intervals a day (outside of sleeping) where I will not look at a screen at all. 
  2. Never bring any device other than an electric toothbrush into the bathroom. 
  3. Three times a week pick up the phone to talk to a friend rather than text, tweet or message them.
