Wifi Setup Best Practices

Wifi Setup Best Practices

  1. Reduce Interference
    1. Many common household devices can interfere with the strength of your wireless connection
    2. Keep the wireless router clear from other electronic devices
  2. Let It Breathe
    1. Wireless routers need to breathe
    2. Place it on a hard surface and keep it a few inches away from the wall
  3. Keep It Cool
    1. Keep the router out of direct sunshine, away from radiators and separated from other electronics
  4. Change the Scenery
    1. Locate your router so wireless signals don't have to pass through dense stuff like brick and metal
    2. Keep from placing the router in an enclosed area
  5. Higher is Better
    1. Finding a place for your router that's higher up gets you better coverage (e.g., bookcase, shelf, upstairs)
    2. Places that are centrally located are even better
  6. Move'em Closer
    1. Pay attention to how far away your device is from the router
    2. Your wireless network only extends so far
    3. When you're on the periphery, the signal starts getting weak and can be intermittent
